No Subs? No Problem... Shorthanded Huskies Control Pasadena City
by Cerwin D Haynes
Playing short-handed is nothing new to East LA College women's basketball coach Bruce Turner. Looking through the boxscores of recent games will tell that his rotation has only been six-deep... five starters and one sub.
Tonight, though, provided a new test of grit and stamina challenge for his starters. They were without their sophomore double-double meister in F Sarah Ramos, so all five starters of guards Moriah Mosley, Jocelyn Garcia, Alisson Davila, Jade Fernandez, and forward Olivia Paramo had to go all 40 minutes of play.
No subs? No problem... the Huskies built up a 20-point lead through the first three quarters of play and withstood a couple of mini-runs by PCC in the fourth to outpace the Lancers, 58-46. Mosley, the sophomore guard, scored 18 points on 6-11 shooting (4-4 3FGs) while adding seven rebounds. Paramo battled heroically in the paint, snatching up 21 rebounds while adding seven points.
Shooting was again at a premium: the Pack only shot 33.3% from the field while holding Pasadena City to 24%. But within that shooting lied one major difference: ELAC hit on 40% from three (8-20) while stifling PCC's attempts from deep (3-31, 9.7%).
HUSKY BITS
- The Huskies have playing short for a little while now. But Pasadena's roster in total only lists seven players. Coach Turner expected the game tonight to be a "war of attrition".
- Freshman G Davile scored 17 points with four made threes... long-range bombs that came in what was ultimately the decisive third quarter.
- Freshman G Garcia scored nine points but pulled down 15 boards (six offensive) to go along with a game-high six assists. She also had three steals.
- Freshman G Fernandez chipped in with six points and two blks.
- Pasadena F Kamora Fletcher came off the bench to lead all scorers with 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Lancer C Celine Bolton-Ford tallied nine blocked shots and added 12 boards.
UP NEXT:
Hopefully the Huskies rest up after their ironman effort tonight, because #20 state-ranked LA Trade Tech comes to the "E-rena" next Wednesday Feb 4th at 7pm.
