Huskies Snare Roadrunners in Straight Sets

East LA College Women's Volleyball's up-and-down season to date has been out of a page of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: with the exception of one game, they either win dominantly or lose in straight sets.

Today against Rio Hondo College, the dominant side showed. The Huskies (7-12, 2-2) tamed the Roadrunners (2-14, 1-3) in straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-12). Sophomore MH/OP Toni Timms led the Pack by way of her best attack outing of the season, tallying 10 kills on 16 attempts against no errors for a season-high .625 kill percentage. Fellow soph OH/OP Gabriela Lara-Garcia led all players with 12 kills and 16 points.

Head coach Dr. Elliott Walker stated earlier in the season that one major focus for this team would be establishing and reinforcing the basics of passing, setting and attacking. During the first two sets, the team's consistency in those areas waned, and it allowed Rio Hondo to hang around. But at one point in each of those sets, ELAC would find their fundamental footing and make a push to establish late leads that they would not relinquish. In the third set, East LA fully realized their ability to execute the basics and wasted little effort in putting away their visitors from Whittier.

Along with Timms' accuracy, the home Green also racked up 11 service aces as Rio Hondo frequently had issues communicating placement of Husky serves.

HUSKY BITS

  • Sophomore S/DS Amy Martinez had 35 assists along with a team-high 13 digs.
  • Rio Hondo's Osyris Roldan had a team high nine points (seven kills, two service aces) along with nine digs.
