Huskies Nab a Pair in Split Doubleheader Home Debut

by Cerwin D Haynes

Coming into this season, ELAC Women's Volleyball head coach Dr. Elliott Walker knew he'd have a very tough task building a team that could follow last year's groundbreaking and record-setting squad. This year's team - full of freshmen and imported sophomores - doesn't have the luxury of the level of experience last year's team had. That, and a month-long opening schedule full of road tournaments and contests, have proven tough trekking as the Pack has struggled to a 2-9 start.

The Huskies were due for some home-cooking: a split-team doubleheader home opener with Cerro Coso College (3-7) and then Chaffey College (2-8) gave the Green two shots to flex Friday in front of their home crowd. ELAC made good of their home court, sweeping both games in straight sets (vs CCC 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 and vs Chaffey 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22).

In the first game, ELAC enjoyed some of their highest kill percentages of the season. Sophomore OH/OP Gabriela Lara-Garcia had a .389 percentage and led the Huskies with 13 points. Freshman MH/OP Samantha Arrizon hit for .333 and was second with 10.5 points. Sophomore MH/OP Toni Timms notched a season high with .462, good for eight points (third-best); all three players had eight kills apiece. Freshman S/OH Susan Santana racked up 24 assists as East LA stuck largely to the fundamentals to safely put away Cerro Coso.

The second game versus Chaffey saw the kills spread out more evenly for the Green, as ELAC enjoyed 36 kills against 16 attack errors whole the Panthers only had 19 kills against 20 attack errors. Katelyn Bravo-Carillo led the Huskies with 10 points.

"Today was about working on rebounding," said Coach Walker after the game. "Today was about communicating with one another, understanding the basics of pass-set-attack, transition game."

The early road-heavy schedule also was not lost on the good doctor. Like his team, he was eager to get back to the "E-rena". "We wanted to come home and represent who we are," Walker remarked, "and we did a good job of doing that."

HUSKY BITS

  • Sophomore DS/L Jacqueline Alvarez had 10 digs in the first game and nine in the second.
  • In addition to her attacking in the first game, Lara-Garcia also had nine digs and five service aces.
  • In the second game, Santana notched 22 assists and nine digs.
  • ELAC scored 10 services aces in Game 2 versus just four aces for Chaffey

UP NEXT:

The Huskies host again on Wednesday September 25 when the Seahawks of LA Harbor College come to the "E-rena". Normally a South Coast Conference matchup, the SCC this season has split into North (ELAC) and South (LAHC) due to having ten total teams competing. Thus this game is now treated as a non-conference matchup. Ball goes up at 6pm.
