Thanks to the exploits of Sakura Divecchio and Marbella Flores, East Los Angeles College Women's Track & Field has carved out a niche of producing excellent mid and long-distance runners. While freshman Renata Cuevas (800m) and sophomore Kiyoko Divecchio (10,000m) look to continue that line of success, it's freshman high-jumper Natalia Ceron who highlights head coach Milton Browne's master plan of expanding his talent base into the "field" part of his program.

The Montebello HS product took home silver at the South Coast Conference Championships last month with a jump of 1.45m, which was the same measurement that got her silver at the LBCC Viking Invitational back in March. But her best jump was 1.47m at the Fresno Pacific Sunbird Invitational in February, earning her a B-standard that could get her to State. Ceron has also participated in the 400m hurdles, the 4x400 relays and the long jump.

Coach Browne says Ceron is learning how to handle the rigors of collegiate competition. "She's working her way back, fighting through injuries throughout the season," says Browne. "She's been getting better as we reach the State meet".

Ceron played basketball at Montebello, and Coach Browne believes there's a lot of potential yet untapped as she transforms from a high school basketball athlete to a upper-level juco track & field competitor. "We knew she was a two-year project," Browne commented. "Need her to develop more, get stronger. That's the biggest thing, getting her able to handle the rigors of college track."

HUSKY BITS

  • Divecchio, sister of former Husky Sakura Divecchio, has an A and B standard in the women's 10,000m. Her time of 40:44.09 in the SoCal prelims bested her previous time of 41:30.59 at the Arnie Robinson Invite.
  • Cuevas earned an A and B standard in the women's 800m (2:22.21 at the SCC Prelims). She also teams with Ceron in the 4x400 relays.
  • The state record for the women's 5000m is held by East LA alum Sylvia Mosqueda back in 1986 (15:52.50).
