ELAC softball defeats LA Harbor 10-2

WILMINGTON, CA mdash; The East Los Angeles College softball team won a five inning, 12 hit, 10-2 game against Los Angeles Harbor College 10-2 in South Coast Conference play.

ELAC led 10-2 after five innings. The game was called due to the mercy rule. It was ELAC’s fourth five-inning mercy rule win this season.

The Huskies, 16-19 overall and 8-10 in the SCC, remained in sixth place, a game behind Pasadena City College (20-16, 9-9). With three SCC games remaining in the season, ELAC has a chance to finish in fifth place with a possible even .500 record.

Harbor (10-22, 5-13) remained in seventh place in the SCC.

The Huskies scored 10 runs in the first three innings while winning pitcher sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr High School) pitched three scoreless innings with three strikes.

ELAC sophomore shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent High School) opened the game with a single to center field. After freshman center fielder Alexis Lazaro (Schurr HS) hit a sacrifice fly for the first out, sophomore catcher Joslyn Macias (California HS) singled.

Mayagoitia scored on a passed ball. After sophomore first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra HS) flied out with a popup to left field, Macias scored after tagging up and ELAC led 2-0.

Freshman right fielder/pitcher Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS) then doubled to right field. Freshman left fielder Julie Munoz (Warren HS) singled and ELAC led 3-0.

Harbor opened the bottom half of the inning with a walk and a single from sophomore catcher Arianna Javier. Diosdado followed with three consecutive outs to end the threat.

In the second inning, The Huskies scored five runs from four hits and a Seahawk error. The hits were from sophomore left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS), Mayagoitia, Diosdado and Munoz. Diosdado retired the Seahawk side.

ELAC added two runs and four more hits in the third inning. The Huskies hits came from Zamudio, Lazaro, Day, who had three RBIs, and Vasquez.

The Huskies play a rubber match game against Cerritos College (24-10, 12-5) in Norwalk at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday, April 19 at 3 p.m. ELAC defeated Cerritos 10-5 on March 24 while Cerritos won 14-1 on March 1.
