Huskies softball loses to ranked teams

TORRANCE, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies softball team lost two South Coast Conference games this week to El Camino College today and to No. 4 Mt San Antonio College on Tuesday.

The Huskies have lost three-consecutive SCC games since a 6-3 upset win against No. 10 Long Beach City College on March 9, won by a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning by first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra HS).

Four SCC teams are ranked in the Southern California top-15 poll, which also includes No. 5 Cerritos College whom ELAC hosts next week. El Camino is one of five teams that received votes, but did not make the top-10.

Against El Camino, the Huskies, 6-15 overall and 2-8 in the SCC, opened the game with a hit in the top of the first inning. With one out, shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent HS) singled through the left side.

Mayagoitia then was caught stealing second base and catcher Joslyn Macias (Whittier HS) grounded out to third base. No runs were scored.

El Camino (15-9, 7-3) followed with two runs in the bottom of the inning off four hits that included Warrior freshman left fielder Taylor Richter (San Pedro HS) double to right center.

Warrior winning pitcher, freshman Natalie Francis (West Torrance HS) scattered two ELAC hits the remainder of the game. Those Husky hits came from Macias and sophomore center fielder Sidney Alaniz (El Rancho HS).

The Warriors scored a run in the second inning and five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Against SCC leader Mt. SAC (19-2, 9-1), ELAC scored first, in the top of the second inning. Day began the inning with a walk. Sophomore pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS) reached first on an error by Mountie first baseman Aimee Rodriguez (North Hollywood HS).

Mayagoitia reached first on an error by Mountie sophomore Priscilla Leon (Upland HS) and the based were loaded.

ELAC freshman designated player Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS) reached first on an error by freshman shortstop Kayla Sok (Glendora HS). The Huskies scored two unearned runs.

Mountie winning pitcher Racqual Espinoza (Golden Valley HS) retired the side, including throwing two strikes. The Mounties followed up with a run in the bottom half of the inning, followed by four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

ELAC had two hits in the 9-2 loss. Vasquez doubled and Macias singled.  Mt. SAC swatted 10 hits that included three Mounties with two each.

The Huskies play three games this weekend in The Bash at the Beach, a softball tournament hosted by Santa Barbara City College.

ELAC resumes SCC play next week with home games against LA Harbor College (7-14, 4-6) on Tuesday and Cerritos (18-6, 8-2) on Thursday. Both games begin at 3 p.m.
