Track Mixes it Up with State's Best Ahead of SCC Prelims
by Cerwin D Haynes
Eager to see how his runners (and his team overall) look against the state's best, East LA College Men's Track and Field head coach Milton Browne had his pack once again participate in the annual Mt SAC Relays this past Saturday.
Sophomore sprinters William Liu and Cristian Dineros were once again in the mix for the top of the men's 100 and 200m dashes. Both finished with a time of 10.59 (tie, 4th) in the 100m, just .07 behind winner Marques Guzman of Mt. SAC. Liu then took fourth in the 200m (21.46) with Guzman winning again in front of the home crowd (20.94). Dineros placed eigth (21.70).
The relays teams landed in the top-10 as well on Saturday: the 4x100 squad (Liu, Justin Guerriero, Dineros, Sean Lawson) placed fifth, clocking in at 41.81, while the 4x400 team (Justin Hernandez, Cristian Dineros, Carter Cousins, William Liu, Lander Flores, Sahid Cervantes, Maurion Jones, Caden Minohara) finished seventh with a time of 3:20.48.
Coach Browne felt they were good, but challenged his guys after the meet. Not satisfied with simply being among the top perfomers, Browne believes they have another gear in them to best the field.
"We have to be mentally tougher," said Browne. "We can't let fatigue and pain be a factor. We need to push harder, starting in practice."
HUSKY BITS
- Freshman Caden Minohara won his heat in the Men's 800m, finishing 11th overall.
