If you're a frequent flyer of this website and a follower of East Los Angeles College football, you may by now be aware of the unique story and impact of DE David Chukwuemeka. A quick primer:
- Nigerian-born young man who played basketball at King Drew HS, where he was a teammate of Huskies' football alum and current Arizona State OL/potential NFL prospect Max Iheanchor.
- Spent two years as a backup power forward at UC-Merced where he played only 52 minutes over two seasons.
- Caught the eye of head coach and athletic director Bobby Godinez and his coaching staff, who used Iheanchor's experience to sell Chukwuemeka on swapping out the shorts and sneakers for a helmet and cleats.
- Arrived on campus late summer, which was his first time taking up football. The Huskies' season opener at San Diego Mesa College was Chukwuemeka's first ever taste of live-action on the gridiron.
In seven games, the former power-forward has 30 tackles, four sacks, 10 TFLs, and a fumble recovery he returned 39 yards for a touchdown. NCAA Division-1 programs all across the country from Syracuse to Baylor to USC (all members of the "Power-5" conferences) have raced to make offers to him. His unique transformation from dunking a basketball to sacking QBs drew the attention of CBS LA's Jill Painter, who was looking for a such a unique story. She sat down with Chukwuemeka (and Godinez) about two weeks ago inside Weingart Stadium to introduce his journey to all of Los Angeles.
CBS LA ran the story last Sunday shortly after the conclusion of the Indianapolis Colts/Los Angeles Chargers game.
