Through the first two games of the Husky baseball season, head coach Alec Adame had been waiting for a game where it all jelled together. Great pitching, timely hitting, and timely defense.
Coach Adame was rewarded for his patience in the third game of the season as the Huskies put it all together in a 9-1 victory over the Moorpark Raiders for the Huskies first win of the year.
"Our club played well today! We were able to pitch to contact, and make all of the routine plays on defense. We had ten hard contacts offensively, and we were able to have a big inning, and score a little bit more runs later in the game. " Adame said postgame,
Starting Pitcher Jacob Ramos set the tone early with five sharp innings scattering five hits and allowing one run.
Jesus Peraza continued his hot start with a one out single in the bottom of the first. Peraza would steal second base and then score on a wild pitch and the Huskies had the early 1-0 lead.
They would hold the lead till the 3rd inning when Hunter Curley scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Franco to get Moorpark on the board. The Raiders would try and take the lead only for Nate Lajoie to be thrown out at the plate, one of many stellar plays for the Husky defense on the day (the Pack also turned two nifty double plays on the evening).
The Huskies would make their mark in the 6th inning. Peraza would lead off with a single followed by a single from Matias Nolasco. Manny Ramirez Jr, continued his torrid start with a run scoring double to score Peraza. James Vasquez would work out a walk, along with a wild pitch that scored Nolasco. Following a walk to Mahki Clark, Rainer Gahagan would clear the bases with a line drive double down the left field line and a 6-1 Husky lead. Following another Raider pitching change, Evan Chavez would finish the scoring with a long 2 run home run to left and a 8-1 Husky lead.
Eric Chavez would score the ninth run for the Huskies in the 8th inning.
"Moorpark's starter was doing a good job keeping us off balance through the first 5 innings. We popped up too many times. So we had to change our approach at the plate, and it paid off! We were able to get into their bullpen!" Adame said of the crucial 6th inning.
Following Ramos's strong start, Tony Ponce, Phillip Chaidez and Nathan Allen would come in from the bullpen to secure the last 12 outs with Ponce earning the win. The bullpen trio would also strike out six Raiders.
Adame loved the overall results "If we look at Friday's game vs. Glendale, we walked 7 and had 3 HBP's. We lost on Friday because we aloud ten free baserunners. I felt like we gave away our two previous games. We made it a point today with only walking 1 batter! Jacob Ramos and Tony Ponce were lights out for us on the mound, and we were able to get Phillip Chaidez and Nathan Allen some work!
The Huskies have a few days off before a two-game series with Riverside City College. The Huskies will visit the Tigers at Cal Baptist on Friday before hosting the Tigers at 5pm on Saturday.
