ELAC volleyball falls short at No. 5 El Camino

TORRANCE, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies volleyball team fought hard, but lost to No. 5 state-ranked El Camino College, 3-0, in a South Coast Conference crossover game.

It was the Warriors fifth sweep this season.

ELAC falls to 7-5 overall and El Camino improves to 8-2.

Four Huskies combined for 19 of ELAC’s 20 kills on the night.

Freshman outside hitter Bela Gamboa (Downey High School) had five kills, six digs and tossed in two service aces while hitting .273 to lead the Huskies.

Freshman outside hitter Makkena Ryan (Oakdale HS) hammered down five kills and had four digs.

Sophomore setter Taryn Higareda (Rosemead HS) had four kills, four digs and a service ace.

Freshman middle hitter Daija Walton (Perris HS) had five kills.

Freshman setter Aifili Tuita'u (Cajon HS) dished out 15 of ELAC’s 18 assists.

SET 1: This set opened with ELAC scoring the first point. El Camino dominated play and went on a 15-5 run for a 15-6 lead. The Warriors closed the set with a 10-6 run and took the first set 25-11. Warrior sophomore Jaylin Motley (Torrance HS) hit three service aces.

SET 2: In the second frame, the Huskies stormed back with focused play that let to five ties and four lead changes.  The Huskies hit four kills sandwiched with a service ace and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Huskies later led 14-13 followed by an El Camino 6-0 run for a lead they would keep. ELAC fought until the end and staved off four-set points. El Camino took the set, 25-21. The Huskies hit 10 kills, El Camino 11.

SET 3: ELAC was down throughout the set. The Warriors attacked at a whopping clip of .556 percent. The Huskies managed five kills, but lost the third set 25-12.

The Huskies play a big game against their crosstown rivals at Los Angeles Trade Tech College on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Join the big crowd and support the Huskies as they go for their fifth straight shutout in five years against the Lady Techsters.
