Huskies women’s basketball defeats Riverside 79-71

SAN MARCOS, Calif. No. 8 East Los Angeles College defeated No. 15 Riverside City College 79-71 in the semifinals of the Palomar College Comet Classic at ‘The Dome.’

The Huskies advance to its second straight tournament championship game this season against No. 5 Palomar College tomorrow in the title game of the Classic. Palomar has not lost on its home court for 33 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2016. The Huskies are primed for an upset after their win tonight.

There were two roads that tell different stories enroute to ELAC’s eight-point win. The first took about 35 minutes and included a nail biting 23 lead changes and eight ties. The second, was the final 4 1/2 minutes of the game.

ELAC led 63-57 entering the final period and increased its lead, its biggest of the game, to eight points on a layup from guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy High School). Riverside chipped at the lead and tied the score 71-71 with 4:36 left in the game.

ELAC led 73-71 on a free throw from guard Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) 30 seconds later and Pool stole the inbounds pass and made a layup. ELAC head coach Bruce Turner had faith with the two starters and three from the bench who were on the floor. The Lady Huskies finished the game with an 8-0 run in the final 4 1/2 minutes to win 79-71.

PAW TRACKS

ELAC had 14 steals to Riverside’s seven. Pool totaled seven steals, a huge difference in the game. She averages 4.3 steals per game, 7th best in the state. She had a double double with 10 points and a game-high 10 assists. Pool had six rebounds and was 2-for-2 at the line. Godbolt also had a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Two other Huskies scored in double figures, guard Jaelynn Curley (Ganado, AZ / Ganado HS) and guard Valerie Godinez (St. Paul HS). Curley scored a team-high 17 points and Godinez scored 13. ELAC had five blocked shots tonight, two from Godbolt and one each from Godinez, and forwards Breanna Hyde (Sherman Oaks CES) who scored eight points and Jadis Watson (Lancaster HS) who scored six.
