MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team brought out the broom today in an 8-4 victory over Compton College in a South Coast Conference crossover game.
The Huskies swept Compton with the win, coupled with their 15-7 victory against the Tartars last month. It is the second straight year the Huskies swept Compton and is the fourth win in six games for ELAC. The Green and White evened out at 10-10 overall.
The Huskies had the home crowd hooting and hollering after taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and increasing it to 4-0 in the third inning.
Compton ran off four runs in the top of the fourth and tied the score at 4-4. Freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century High School) replaced freshman Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton / Edison HS). Shomo got out of the jam and coasted the remaining innings limiting Compton to three scattered hits.
ELAC added a run in the home half of the fifth and led 5-4 and closed the lights out on Compton with three runs in the sixth.
Shomo (4-7) was the winning pitcher. She kept Compton scoreless while in the circle for three innings and struck out one as did Villalvazo.
Each team had eight hits. The Huskies cashed in on half of its hits in the four innings that they scored runs. Compton did most of its damage in the fourth inning.
Sophomore second baseman Sara Serrano (Baldwin Park / Sierra Vista HS) led the Husky slam fest. She singled twice with two runs batted in. Sophomore right fielder Natalie Acosta (Bell HS) singled (2 RBIs).
Sophomore first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS) doubled and singled twice (RBI). Sophomore Julie Granadeno’s (LA Marshall HS) sacrifice flies bought in two RBIs.
Two sophomores each singled, left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) and short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS).
Freshman third baseman Riah Nunley (King/Drew Magnet HS) hit a three-run home run for Compton. Teammate freshman designated player Yazzmine Arrington-Edwards (Long Beach Cabrillo HS) singled three times.
ELAC continues play in the Ventura College Spring Games Tournament beginning with a game against Allan Hancock College (13-7-2) on Saturday. The Huskies play a double header on Sunday, the first against Porterville College (11-10) then against Moorpark College (13-8).
